Stewardship – Responsibility, Leadership and Conservation

Step into Conservation and Long‑Term Responsibility with Our Stewardship Program

Stewardship training is for those who are ready to move beyond participation into stewardship with Wilderness Trails and the Chilcotin Ark Institute. Over 6 weeks to 2 years, you take on real responsibility for projects, people and parts of the Chilcotin Ark ecosystem, while continuing to live the Six Principles every day. This level links your personal development with conservation, leadership and entrepreneurship, so your growth directly contributes to the greater good.

University Practicum / Co-Op Stewardship

Who Stewardship Is For

Stewardship training is designed for people who have already experienced Immersion or equivalent hands‑on training and want to take the next step into ownership. You are no longer asking whether this lifestyle is right for you—you know that meaningful work, wilderness and community matter deeply, and now you want to integrate them into your long‑term path. This level suits those exploring leadership roles, stewardship positions, university practicums, or potential long‑term partnership within the Human Potential ecosystem.

This is for you if…

  • You are ready to be accountable for projects from start to finish, not just help with tasks
  • You want your personal development to result in tangible benefits for the land, wildlife and community
  • You are prepared to stay for months to build continuity, trust and deeper impact
  • You are considering future collaboration, employment or co‑creation within this ecosystem

Choose Your Stewardship Training

Stewardship training offers several options that match different backgrounds, goals and visa conditions. All options share the same foundations—Six Principles, conservation focus, community living and personal responsibility—but differ in emphasis and formal structure.

University Practicum / Co-Op Stewardship

University Practicum / Co-Op

Combine academic requirements with real‑world experience in conservation, tourism, management or education. You work on defined projects that meet both your institution’s criteria and the needs of the Chilcotin Ark, gaining credits while contributing to meaningful outcomes

Management Training

Take on substantial responsibility for aspects of ranch, operations or program management. You learn to plan seasons, coordinate people and resources, respond to challenges and improve systems, preparing you for future leadership roles in wilderness‑based organizations.

Entrepreneur Training

Develop and refine mission‑aligned enterprises that integrate wilderness experiences, conservation and human potential training. You work on real projects—such as new programs, services or partnerships—learning how to design, test and iterate offerings that serve both guests and the ecosystem.

What You Focus On with Stewardship Training

Learning Focus:
The focus of Stewardship training is ownership. You move from being a learner and assistant to being a steward and leader, responsible for results over time. Rather than asking “What should I do?”, you begin asking “What does this project, this team, this part of the ecosystem need from me now?” and acting accordingly. Personal development, conservation and leadership are no longer separate topics—they become different faces of the same daily practice.

Core Elements:
Core elements of this level include long‑horizon projects, leadership in the field and structured reflection on values and impact. You might coordinate a conservation initiative across seasons, oversee guest or volunteer programs, manage parts of ranch operations or co‑create new training offerings. Regular check‑ins, mentoring conversations and self‑reflection help you track how your decisions align with the Six Principles, Is vs Choice and the Meaning of Life.

What You Can Expect to Gain

By the end of a Stewardship program, you do not just understand concepts like responsibility, stewardship and leadership—you have lived them. You know what it means to be counted on, to follow through when things are difficult, and to make decisions that balance your needs with those of others and the land. You have designed, run or improved real projects or services and can point to concrete outcomes you helped create. This gives you a strong foundation for any future path that requires maturity, initiative and a long‑term view.

  • Demonstrated experience leading or co‑leading projects, programs or teams
  • A deeper, more grounded sense of purpose connected to the greater good
  • Practical, transferable skills in management, collaboration, communication and problem‑solving
  • A clearer sense of whether you want to continue into the Learning Village as a long‑term community member and co‑creator

Visa Requirements

To join us for these training programs from outside Canada you will need Work and Travel Visa or a Co-Op Visa, both through the International Experience Canada Program. Take a look at the Government of Canada’s website to see if you are eligible for these visas.

How Stewardship Leads to the Learning Village

Stewardship training develops stewards who can hold responsibility for projects, people and parts of the ecosystem over extended periods. For those who want to make this way of life their long‑term home rather than a chapter, the Learning Village becomes the natural next step. There, your leadership, partnerships and enterprises are embedded in a community committed to a shared Forever Plan for the Chilcotin Ark. You move from leading within a program to co‑creating the multi‑generational culture, structures and stories that will carry this mission forward.
